Microchipping

Keeping Your Pet Safe with Microchipping

Microchipping is a method of permanently identifying your pet by inserting a tiny chip—about the size of a grain of rice—under their skin, typically between the shoulders. The procedure is quick and done using a needle, similar to getting a shot. It doesn’t require surgery or anesthesia, although it can be conveniently done while your pet is under anesthesia for a spay or neuter. Once implanted, the chip must be registered with your contact information in a pet database, and it’s important to keep that information current. The chip contains a unique ID number, but it doesn’t use GPS or track your pet. When a vet or shelter scans the chip, the ID number appears and is matched with your details in the database, allowing them to contact you. Microchipping provides a permanent form of ID that won’t fall off, helps reunite lost pets with their owners, lasts a lifetime, and is now required for travel to the U.S. and internationally.
